The Working Day

Your day in the American West begins around 8 AM with a hot breakfast. As a part of the cowboy crew you will be advised of the days plans. After the breakfast meeting you will gather at the horse corrals where you will be paired up with, and saddle, a horse. We have horses to accommodate all levels of riders.

The ranches operating area consists of both private land and Targhee National Forest which we graze under a federal grazing permit for a total of over 27,000 acres. We ride out from camp to begin our day. As a part of the cowboy crew you will help in every aspect of the activities that make up the cowhand's day. Sick or injured stock will be roped and doctored upon discovery. Pairs (cow/calf), will be inspected to ensure that calves have not become separated from their mothers. Strays will be gathered if necessary. At times range management requires that the cattle be trailed (driven), to new pastures. This takes the better part of a week and requires extensive riding. Putting out salt and repairing fences are also needs to be addressed. Lunch will most likely be eaten on the trail around noon time.

Your travels will take you through some of the most beautiful country in the world. Guests rarely see another person while out on the trail. Breathtaking views of rivers, waterfalls, and mountains, will greet you at every turn. Follow game trails unspoiled by man. Sharpen your tracking skills by reading signs left by moose, elk, deer, bear, and a variety of other wildlife.

Your day will end around 5 to 6 PM, however we make no guarantees. A hearty home style meal will await your return. We serve up a variety of foods, including steak, pan fried trout (providing you catch some!), dutch oven dishes, fruits, vegetables, and fresh baked breads and desserts. You won't go hungry at the ranch.

After supper there's time for fishing (acquire a license in nearby Ashton), visiting close by scenic attractions (car rental in Idaho Falls), practicing roping, or just relaxing around the fire and reliving the day with your fellow wranglers. Sit on you cabin's front porch if you like and gaze at the spectacular, star studded sky. A comfortable, modern cabin, sleeping 2 guests each, awaits you when you're ready to turn in for the night. Private bathrooms and small kitchenettes make for an enjoyable stay.
